Traveling to Manchester

Manchester is an easy city to reach. The Manchester International Airport, 10 miles south of the city, offers direct flights from 53 international destinations, with other flights connecting through London. Manchester is also served by 4 major train stations, with 3-hour express trains running from London.

American Airlines has been selected as the official airlines of ANAEROBE 2000 for flights from the United States to the Congress. American is offering 5% off any applicable fare between July 4, 2000 and July 18, 2000. American has direct flights to Manchester from Chicago, IL and Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX and connections through London. To enjoy this savings, call the American Meeting Services Desk at 800-433-1790 and reference STARfile number AN7570UK.

Car Rental and Local Transportation

Avis Rent-a-Car is offering a 40% discount on car rentals in Europe between July 4, 2000 and July 18, 2000. Should lower qualifying rates become available, Avis will provide a 5% discount on the lower rate. If the selected car size is not available, Avis will discount the best available rate by 5%. The Avis reservations can be made through the American Airlines Meeting Service desk (see above) or direct with Avis at 800-331-1600 and reference discount number D005816.

Getting from the Airport

Frequent trains run between the Airport and Manchester Piccadilly, near the Congress hotels, and other train stations. Fare is £2.25, more before 9am. Buses from the airport deliver you to the Piccadilly Gardens Bus Station, across the street from the Thistle Manchester. Taxi service to the City Center is around £12.

Transportation within the City

Manchester is a very walkable city, taking no more than 20 minutes to walk from one side of the City Centre to the other. If you want to ride, Manchester has one of Europe¹s newest electric tram systems which runs across the city, with a major station set in front of the Thistle Manchester. These trams are supplemented by double decker buses. To get directly to your destination, taxis are available at taxi ranks or may be ordered by telephone. The hotel concierge will be happy to order a taxi for you. A Wayfarer daily pass, £5.50, can be purchased for unlimited travel on buses to explore beyond the City Centre, such as going out to the Peak District.

Tourist Information

The Manchester Tourist Information Centre is located in St. Peter's Square, across the street from the Town Hall. The telephone number is: 0161 234 3157 / 3158.
