As England's second largest city, Manchester has shed its industrial past to become an academic center of colleges and universities, with a vibrant arts and cultural community. Points of InterestManchester's Victorian neo-Gothic Town Hall, St. Peters Square, shown on the cover, was completed in 1876. Established by Victorian Industrialists in the early 19th Century, these galleries have works by Gainsborourgh, Stubbs and Turner and Pre-Raphaelite collections. Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester, Manchester, free. This gallery is famous for it's British water colors, wallpapers, amazing textiles and contemporary works. Gallery of Costume, Wilmslow Rd., Platt Hall, Rusholme, Manchester. This is an 18th Century textile merchant's home that holds an amazing collection of clothing throughout the ages. Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Peel Park, Salford, free. The gallery is currently home to the largest collection of L.S. Lowry's works. The museum is a preserved Victorian street, which is enthralling. The Manchester Museum, Manchester University, free. This museum holds a large Egyptian collection and is also home to mineral, fossil and dinosaur collections. Manchester Science and Industry Museum, £5. This is a fascinating interactive museum, with hands-on experiments for children and adults. It includes historic working machinery, dinosaurs and working locomotives. Granada Studios is a working television studio, offering tours that provide "experiences" ranging from space/ horror motion simulator rides to special effects shows and backstage tours. The Anaerobe Banquet dinner will be held on the Sherlock Holmes Baker Street set. Manchester Jewish Museum, Cheetham Hill Rd., Cheetham Hill. This museum covers the Jewish community in Manchester over the last 200 years. The museum is housed in a fully restored 1874 Portuguese Synagogue. Guided Tours are available through Blue Badge Tours covering specific areas of cultural and historical interest including a pub tour, a tour of the city's underground canals and a Murder and Mystery tour that includes a visit to the Police Museum.
