of the Americas (ASA) hosts its 11th biennial Congress--ANAEROBE 2012--June 27-July 1, in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA. The Pre-Congress Workshops will be held at Santa Clara University (45 miles south of San Francisco) and the Anaerobe Congress takes place at the Grand Hyatt Hotel (off Union Square) in downtown San Francisco, CA USA.
ANAEROBE 2012 will address both the clinical and microbiological aspects of anaerobes, as related to human diseases, animal disease, and environmental
conditions. Mixing theory and practical applications, the Congress will consist of invited speakers, oral
presentations, and poster presentations, representing work by researchers
from 28 countries.
Program
The ANAEROBE 2012 program consists of a Pre-Congress Workshop (see below) and general sessions consisting of 17 sessions of oral presentations by speakers from 11 countries. Further research will be presented as

are invited to attend and participate in this Congress to engage in
presentations, exchanges, and dialogue on issues related to the study of
anaerobes. We particularly hope to attract bench hospital technologists,
by offering a Pre-Congress Workshop on Anaerobic Identification and Susceptibility
Testing Methods.
Congress Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able
to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the latest developments in the field of
anaerobe research.
2. Apply new recommendations in the diagnosis, screening, treatment, and prevention of
clostridial, obstetric and gynecological, periodontal, intestinal, and
other anaerobic infections.
3. Incorporate better utilization of the microbiology laboratory into thedelivery of patient care.
Pre-Congress Hands-On Workshop - June 27-28, 2012
The Pre-Congress Anaerobic Identification and Susceptibility Testing Workshop will be conducted June 27-28, 2012 on the campus of Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, CA. This 2-day course will consist of lectures and hands-on experience, covering both classical and advanced methods for identification and susceptibility testing of anaerobic bacteriology.
The first day will explore techniques for identifying anaerobes based on phenotypic characteristics and susceptibility testing methods. The second day will address the advanced isolate identification methods, of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry, 16S rDNA Sequencing, Culture Independent Methods, and Pyrosequencing. This workshop is accredited for 14 continuing education contact hours for clinical laboratory scientists.
