The Anaerobe Society of the Americas (ASA) hosts its 8th biennial Congress--ANAEROBE 2006--July 25-28, 2006 in beautiful Boise, Idaho, USA. ANAEROBE 2006 will address both the clinical and microbiological aspects of anaerobic infections, their diagnosis, and their therapy among medical practitioners and researchers by mixing theory and practical applications. The Congress will consist of invited speakers, oral presentations, and poster presentations, representing work by researchers in 22 countries.

Target Audience

Researchers, clinicians, and technicians from around the world are invited to attend and participate in this Congress to engage in presentations, exchanges, and dialogue on issues related to the study of anaerobes. We particularly hope to attract bench hospital microbiologists, offering a Pre-Congress Workshop on Anaerobic Identification Using Conventional Techniques and Sequencing of 16S rDNA and Susceptibility Testing Methods.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participant will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the latest developments in the field of anaerobe research.
2. Apply new recommendations in the diagnosis, screening, and treatment of clostridial, obstetric and gynecological, periodontal, intestinal, and other anaerobic infections.
3. Understand the role of anaerobic infections in veterinary medicine.
4. Incorporate better utilization of the microbiology laboratory into the delivert of patient care.

Pre-Congress Workshop -- Tuesday, July 25, 2006

Techniques for identifying anaerobes based on phenotypic characteristics will be presented. These methods will include appearance on gram-stain, growth on selective media, susceptibility to special potency antibiotic disks, preformed enzyme reactions, and classical biochemical reactions. A discussion on sequencing 16s rDNA for difficult strains will be included The Anaerobe Educator software program will be used to present test reactions and to allow for active audience participation in the identification of organisms. Susceptibility testing methods, including agar dilution, broth microdilution, and Etest will be discussed. Each student will receive a copy of the Anaerobe Educator. 7 hours of continuing education units for Laboratory Technicians.

The Setting

Boise, the City of Trees is a wonderful setting for scholarly discourse and social activities. The Boise Centre on the Grove is a first-class meeting facility, in an intimate downtown location. The region also provides a wide variety of recreational activities, including river rafting, camping, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, bird watching, and sightseeing. Our meeting coincides with the annual Boise Basque Festival.

Accommodations

The 4-Diamond Grove Hotel will provide accommodations for Congress delegates at a discount room rate of $109 + tax per night. Located adjacent to the Boise Center, the hotel offers fine dining, a health club with swimming pool, internet service in the rooms, and outstanding restaurants, museums, and nightlife just steps away. Social Activities

Tuesday, July 25 -- World Center for Birds of Prey Tour. The World Center for Birds of Prey, world headquarters of he Peregrine Fund, propagates birds of prey for release into the wild. This is a great opportunity to see rare hawks, eagles, and a pair of California Condors up-close on this docent-lead tour.

Wednesday, July 26 -- Congress Reception. The opening day of sessions concludes with a Wine & Cheese Reception for delegates to socialize.

Thursday, July 27 -- Congress Banquet. The Congress Banquet will be a Taste of Boise. The reception, at the Boise Basque Museum, will feature a sampling of Basque appetizers, as well as regional beverages. The dinner will be held under the stars with regional dishes and entertainment.

Friday, July 28 -- River Raft Trip & Dinner. At the conclusion of the ANAEROBE 2006, join us for a relaxing 3-hour river raft trip down the Payette River, outside Boise. This river, with its playful rapids, is perfect for beginners and veterans of all ages. Trip includes transportation, rafting, and a riverside 4-course dinner. We will return to catch the opening evening of the Boise Basque Festival, which runs through the weekend.

Registration

Congress registration includes Delegate packet, Abstract Book, admission to Congress sessions and poster areas, continental breakfasts, coffee breaks, and Wednesday evening reception. Full registration also includes the Congress Banquet on Thursday evening. Additional dinner tickets may be purchased separately.

Pre-registration discounts are available if received by June 2, 2006. No advance registrations will be accepted after July 14, 2006. Registration fees at the door must be paid in cash (U.S. Dollars).

Accommodations at The Grove Hotel are assigned on a first-come basis. Reservations must be made through the Congress office and received by June 2, 2006. After June 2, reservations will be accepted on a space and rate available basis booked directly with the hotel at 888-961-5000. Reservations must be accompanied by credit card information to guarantee the room at the Congress rate.
